Anastasia, St Helen and St Katharine

Rook

Rook is a thoughtfully written story that starts off from the viewpoint of a bird (a rook) and then changes to the life and thoughts of a human boy. As it’s a short story, it is a quick and comfortable read.
The characters are realistic, and the plot is a little simple but believable. The story contains an interesting mix of dialogue and narration, which allows the reader to empathise with the main characters thoughts and emotions. This is something I found enjoyable. There is also an even mix of sentence length which adds interest to the book.
Towards the end of the book, a relationship forms between two of the main characters, introducing a tense and intriguing dimension.
I rate ‘Rook’ 6/10 as it is fun to read but, too short to rave about and the author does leave the reader confused without a clear conclusion to the story.
