The Smell of Other People's Houses
I loved this book from start to finish. I thought it had a very well written story line and even though I thought there could have been more to the story I was very pleased with the ending. Overall the book was very interesting and I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed reading it because it was set in a time and place I haven't read about before. My favourite bit about it was how true some of it was. People can get into some of those awful situations and I loved how strong the characters were written.
My favourite characters were Ruth and Hank. I really loved Ruth's character and even though she made a silly decision at the start she grows stronger throughout. I found that Ruth's and Hank's story was the best because Alyce saved Sam and all but Ruth's and Hank's story really caught my attention. I mean, you don't often get people falling in love because someone decides to swim across a river to a nunnery to see a girl that he barely knows. I sat reading that section with my eyes wide in shock. I ended up loving that part because as I am a fan of romance that really touched me. They barely knew each other but still he tried so hard to get their attention. I thought the ending worked perfectly for them, despite my hate of cliffhangers they deserved a happy ending after all they had been through.
I felt reading the book that the character of Jack and Dora should have somehow linked. Yes, that may have been confusing but if they had all linked together somehow then that would have made the story longer and (in my opinion) better. I was a bit upset when Jack wasn't used as much as he could have. I really liked how Jack was portrayed as a mysterious character with a 'sixth sense'. It made that family more interesting.
All in all I found the book a thrilling and interesting read. If there is a book similar to this one I would read it within a heartbeat. It didn't just teach me about love but also some life lessons. I would defenitely recommend this book to people who enjoy Romance, Adventure and teenage problems books.
