The Smell of Other People's Houses
This book appealed to me because the setting was very different to any I had read before - I knew very little about Alaska and so found it really interesting. I also enjoyed the structure of the story and the way that the different characters' experiences wove into one another so that by the end the whole thing had come together in an unexpected finale. My favourite character was probably Alice - she had a real sense of obligation to her family, so much so that she was willing to give up her own dream, but in the end she realised that her dad would be happy as long as she was doing what she loved. I liked the way that her story and another character's connected unexpectedly out on the ocean!
