Ms Murray, Queen Elizabeth's School
I think this book is beautifully written from a linguistic point of view, but the story is harrowing and I really didn't find it uplifting in any sense. At times I was really uncomfortable reading it - not something I usually enjoy in a book. I can see why it's a worthy tale to have told, given that child abuse is a sad fact of life. Still, I think it might have been better if there was more of an explicit sense of hope by the end - I felt like Beck just drifted from place to place without really finding where he belonged. I also didn't feel that the plot really developed. No doubt one that will divide opinion!
