The Hate U Give

'The Hate U Give' by Angie Thomas is an intriguing, well written novel that is both tragic and inspirational. It explores many important issues in today's society such as racism, gang violence and injustice. This novel is an essential read for all young people around the world, as there is a clear message throughout: don't be afraid to stand up for what's right. However, I would only suggest this novel to readers aged 13 or above due to the violence and crude language it contains. Raw emotion and truths are what makes this novel so unique. I really enjoyed the experience of reading from the perspective of an African-American girl. The contrast between Starr’s two worlds and the challenges she faces every day are authentic and interesting. The plot was original and the story didn’t end as expected. I would recommend this novel to any mature reader who wants a powerful story that is impossible to forget. I believe there is a very high chance ‘The Hate U Give’ will win the Carnegie Medal due to its authenticity and the important issues it addresses.
