The Bone Sparrow
The Bone Sparrow is a book you would read and not get enough of. When I started reading it, I just couldn't put it down and often found myself sneaking a flashlight at night and reading until midnight. ‘The Bone Sparrow’ is an action-packed book with beautifully designed worlds and characters but which is also realistic in a way that you feel like you are Subhi. When I was reading the book, I imagined the awful things that were happening to Subhi and the rest of people living in the detention camp. In any other book, you would take this for granted. In 'The Bone Sparrow', Zana Fraillon did her best to really engage you in the story and show that these things are not just happening in the book, but they are happening in the real world right now.
The author does not really give you a sense of where you are, how old the characters are and the background of the people living in the camp. I think she does this because she wants you to imagine the story yourself and get a perspective from your point of view.
A little way into the book, Subhi meets a scruffy little girl named Jimmie from outside the camp and they become friends. Jimmie cannot read but Subhi can, so every night the meet at a broken part of the fence where they exchange favours: Subhi reads Jimmie’s Mom’s stories and she brings him food and hot chocolate. I think she did this to show how terrible the food was at the camp and how unfair it is that Subhi has not tasted proper food in her whole life. Another memorable character in the book is a guard called Harvey. Harvey knows how terrible it is to live in a detention camp, so he tries to make life as easy as possible for people living there; he is a character everyone looks up to. One of the antagonists in the story is an old guard called Beaver. Nobody in the camp likes Beaver very much because he is overly aggressive and is not a nice person to be around.
Overall 'The Bone Sparrow' is a breathtaking story that combines Fiction and Non-Fiction to create a reading experience that you will never forget.
