Salt to the Sea
This was such a powerful story even without the novel, by which I mean the real story behind the novel and the huge loss of life in the sinking of a ship carrying over 10,000 lives. It is a story of which I knew nothing extraordinarily when we know so much about other disasters. The writer created some intriguing characters, all so different, and placed them in this historical setting, pushing themselves on across Northern Europe away from the Russian military. The story moved me and the reality affected me greatly and I spent some time looking up the real story afterwards.
