Mrs Conlon, Palmers Green High School
So, I've just finished my first book from the shortlist and it didn't disappoint! Wolf Hollow is a wonderfully atmospheric coming of age story with the main character and narrator, Annabelle, having to come to terms with a traumatic upheaval in her life when a new girl arrives at her school from the city.
The story is beautifully written and Lauren Wolk manages to realistically evoke family life on a farm in 1940s midwest America. There are overtones of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in the story as we start to see the strong sense of justice that Annabelle feels for a man who is wrongly accused of a crime. She is a strong character and although young, she is determined to help this man, Toby, who she has a strong connection with. There are some very moving elements in the story as we start to find out more about Toby's background. There are also twists and turns and an element of mystery runs through the book that certainly kept me reading and wanting to know what was going to happen. Suffice to say, there is a shock ending - so don't read too many other reviews if you don't want to know what the outcome is!
