Saint Death
I'm a fan of Marcus Sedgwick. He's not one of those writers of series where every book is virtually the same. The Mexican setting of this book was interesting, although I soon got a bit fed up with the Spanish punctuation, and there was a real insight into drug gangs and the drug culture of the country, which I know is extremely dangerous with a very high murder rate. The card game scenes were tense and exciting and I had no idea how it was all going to play out. Sedgwick did not take the easy way out in terms of the ending. I didn't particularly like the 'Santa Muerta' bits or what I regarded as the interruptions to the story - I don't think they added anything to it . A good way of thinking about life in a much more challenging society. 6/10
