Salt to the Sea

This was an amazing story. I have read many books based on the 1st and 2nd world wars and this was one of the best that I have read. I loved the stile of writing, changing from character to character. This means that you can see the scene from each character's perspective and this creates a lot of dramatic irony. Despite the reader knowing more than the characters, there are still many surprises. One of those many surprises, is the ship sinking and sadly Emilia dying. Emilia's child is a symbol of hope in war and I think that this was a beautiful concept for the story as, although it was all about the darkness of war there were lots of glimpses of hope, such as the pink hats, the new-born baby and Joana and Florian's love. I loved this book.
