Where the World Ends

This book is like no other book I have read and it is not one that I would have expected to enjoy and admire so much, but I really loved it and finished it in a couple of days as I couldn't put it down. I was totally immersed in this story, mainly because of the sublime detailed description of this desolate island of St Kilda in the outer Hebrides. The author describes very single detail so expertly, painting the desolate landscape to the last tiny detail and building up the sense of suspense - our minds re filled with questions - why are they here? Why has no one come to collect them? When will they get to return home? Quilliam is the bravest and most resourceful of characters, spinning stories and using the power of the mind to deal with the situation. He binds other characters together and shows exceptional maturity and bravery. We get involved in the dynamics between the group members, as everywhere in life some are just plain obnoxious regardless of the poignancy of their circumstances. Without giving away any spoilers I liked the ending, everything sufficiently explained but not overdone. I would describe the storytelling technique in this book as "cinematic", and I would love to see a movie adaption of this book. There would not be many bright colours or happy music! But it really transports the reader like no other book I have ever read. I would have no hesitation in giving this the highest star rating!
