Salt to the Sea

Salt to the sea is an incredibly moving book that follows the story of four characters in quadruple narrative in Germany during the time of the Second World War. While each character is uniquely different this book also highlights the similarities between them and the troubles they are facing. The setting is German in a scene of torn, ruin and chaos thousands of refugees flock to the docks lining the Baltic Sea desperate to get a chance to escape on one of the boats waiting there. Threw strange and trying circumstances these four strangers all end up on the Wilhelm Gustloff. Each has a specific reason and purpose for being on that ship, so when disaster strikes they must all pull together to save each other or the people depending on them suffer. It is a beautifully moving book that has traced tear tracks down my face more than once and kept me hooked on the edge of suspense from the first page. A compelling read and one I would recommend to not only those who enjoy historical fiction but also to those looking for a book that could change the way they see them themselves, others and the world. I personally believe it is a deserving winner of the Carnie award and a fabulously written book.
