The Smell of Other People's Houses
This book tells the interconnected stories of Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank, four teenagers with lives that seem similar but also very different.
Without spoiling this beautifully written novel) Set in Alaska during the 1970's, Ruth wishes to be remembered by her mother; Dora struggles at home with an abusive father; To please her parents, Alyce stays at home and Hank gas to make decision on whether or not he should run away for the sake of his brothers. The lives of these four are about to become intertwined...
At the beginning of this novel, I was a bit unsure of the way this book had been structured. However, as I carried on reading and dug deeper into the book, I saw how telling the story this way was able to get the story across.
Also, I would like to mention the front cover of the book (I know you should never judge a book by its cover but I couldn't help it!). Just by glancing at the wonderfully illustrated cover I could already tell it was going to be a fantastic read. I would give this book 4.5 stars!
