Heather, Glossopdale School

The Hate U Give

If you need an emotional book to read that tells of the struggles of growing up in the ghetto and seeing horrible hate crimes, then The Hate U Give is the book for you!

The story-line is centred around 16-year-old Starr, a black girl who has seen two of her best friends get shot and killed. Within the first few pages you already get a sense of the loss Starr has faced and how much the young girl has gone through. After her friend, Natasha, is killed in a drive-by shooting, Starr's parents (a former drug dealer and a nurse) decide to send her and her brothers to a posh school, 45 minutes from Garden Heights (where they live). Starr can't be herself at school and has to change who she is, so that she fits in. Life goes on for six years until one night after a party a policeman shoots her best friend, Khalil, and kills him! Starr faces the problem of being the only witness and having to give numerous interviews so that people can hear the truth. Will life carry on again for Starr? Or will something happen to her along the way?

I give this book 5 stars because it is very well-written and has a great plot with thought out characters.
