Ms McCabe, Brooke Weston Book Busters

The Hate U Give

Everyone needs to read The Hate U Give which was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and sparked off by real life events. Narrated by 16-year old Starr who witnesses a police officer murder her unarmed childhood friend Khalil. Starr has to decide in the face of injustice, discrimination and intimidation whether to speak up or stay silent. Alongside this Starr is struggling to navigate between two very different worlds, family and community on one hand and school on the other where she is one of only a handful of black students. The love and support of Starrs family guiding her through her conflict is heart-warming. The story highlights all of the things that still need to change with regards to cultural biases and racism but it also has a note of optimism for the future. This is an extremely powerful book and I would definitely recommend it.
