Ms McCarthy, St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School

The Stars at Oktober Bend

This is a deeply moving and beautifully written novel. A tragic and mysterious event has left fifteen year old Alice Nightingale with a life changing brain injury and torn a hole through her close family. Stuck forever at the age of 12 Alice writes poetry which she leaves in public places for others to find. She meets Manny James who has lost his whole family in a brutal war in Sierra Leone and who has found one of her poems at a railway station. As their relationship develops she begins to learn how to be fifteen and how to love and heal. The writing style is quirky but lyrical; when Alice speaks the prose reflects the effect her injuries have had on her speech and, as she calls them, her faulty electrics. The relationship between Alice and her older brother Joey is also lovely to read.
