Beck

An amazing book; harrowing, shocking, sad and joyful, every emotion covered in one novel.
The feeling of hope over adversity shines through but it is a difficult read and not for the faint-hearted.

Of all the books on this year's short list 'Beck' is the most well written, Meg Rosoff has taken up Mal Peet's manuscript with seamless flair. This is novel with huge compassion but whether it's for young people I just don't know. Exceptional writing but should it be on the Carnegie shortlist, there's a question.
