Mrs Robinson, Highfields School
Having read "Beck" I can clearly see why it has an age guide of 16+. It contains a very violent, disturbing scene which makes it in no way suitable for the age group Carnegie shadowing is actually aimed at and we will not be allowing our Year 8 and 9 students to read it. It is not, in my opinion, a children's book at all and I can see no reason therefore, for it to be included in the shortlist of a children's book award. Despite its being quite an "easy read" in terms of language and plot, I feel that the themes and issues it addresses make it a book for adults, not young people. Having said that, it was well-written and engaging and I enjoyed reading it. And that sums it up for me really: a fairly good book, but not outstanding and certainly not award-winning.
