After the Fire
After the Fire by Will Hill was a really emotional and moving book. I enjoyed it thoroughly as it was very unique.
The book followed Moonbeam - a 17 year old girl who had been living in a Chiristian Sect for all her life after a catastrophic incident where escaped. The story is told when she was placed in therapy and recalls the terrifying days of living under Father John's watchful eye.
I loved the way the story was told as it worked really effectively. The Before part, where she would be recalling the days as they happened, was extremely useful in understanding the characters through the main protagonist's point of view. I also thought that the fact that the first chapter being retold word for word near the ending was such a clever idea as it gave us the chance to revisit that first chapter which told us everything that happened(ish) again but now with the knowledge of the characters personality and this time allowing us to feel pity and sorrow that these characters were dead or in a fearful position.
I liked the idea and the plot of After the Fire because I thought that it was a very different and unique idea - eventhough it had been based on the Branch Davidian Sect siege of 1993. The main character was easy to sympethise with because of her undeniably terrible position and her self-blaming attitude. Moonbeam, being the oldest, took on the responsibilty that her therapists put on her well and she had a sense of heroism about her which I liked immediately.
The ending, for me, was quite disappointing because I didn't like the fact that it was so cliché especailly after such an extraordinary beginning. Although it was nice and happy, I felt like it could have been told in a different way because it seemed quite strange to suddenly have her Mum show up. It could have been more interesting and different but it wasn't heartwrenchingly terrible.
I would recommend this book to a friend because not only was it just enjoyable to read, but because it also had a subtle moral as well. I would read this again. 5/5
