Ms B, Chipping Norton School
This is a wonderful coming-of-age novel which explores the themes of right/wrong, prejudice and bigotry through the voice of an intelligent and thoughtful main character.
The parallels between the events that are unfolding in this small community in 1943 America and what is happening in the rest of the world at this time are subtle but well made.
The description of the idyllic rural Pennsylvanian countryside is especially beautiful.
SPOILER ALERT: As much as I wanted the story to have a 'happy ending' I think that it is a better novel because it doesn't.
