The CILIP Carnegie awarded book, 'Beck', I found was quite a harsh tale that had many moments of unnecessary graphic and explicit description. This, unfortunately made for an unpleasant read throughout. Nevertheless, it did convey the true cruelty inflicted on people such as Beck, just due to his skin colour. Hopefully by Mal Peet sharing this story with the public, more people will be educated. To sum up 'Beck', the author made it a happier ending to show that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Again, it was a true past for people like Beck, but the amount of graphic content seemed more intended for an adult book rather than a young adult book.
