The Smell of Other People's Houses
The Smell of Other People's Houses is a book about four peoples' lives and how they entwine. It is written from the perspectives of Hank, Ruth, Dora and Alyce. Ruth is a teenager whose father died when she was young. She now lives with her grandmother and her sister. She becomes pregnant and therefore is sent to a nunnery until her baby is born. Dora is a young girl whose parents are poor but she wins a competition with a large cash prize. Dora is scared that her father will come out of prison wanting the money so she moves in with a friend called Dumpling. Hank is one of three brothers who run away from home. They go on a ferry but one of them falls overboard and is rescued by Alyce. Hank and his younger brother are later sent to live with foster parents and find their brother in the same town. Alyce is a girl who goes fishing with her father but she really wants to dance. She is on her father's boat and sees a boy fall off a ferry, she then goes to save him. I find this a very interesting book but some might find it hard to follow the four story lines so I would give it 8/10.
