The Bone Sparrow
I thought The Bone Sparrow was a great book with interesting ideas and truth hidden inside the story. It's about a refugee called Subhi whose lived in an immigration detention centre all his life and who befriends a girl from the outside world called Jimmie.
They end up becoming friends and she sneaks into the camp to listen to Subhi who reads her stories, often bringing hot chocolate and food with her. I found these parts quite touching as it shows them becoming good friends despite the situation. (I thought it was important that Jimmie never seems to mind sneaking into the camp to see Subhi despite the danger.)
This book also has a lot of detail about the trouble that occurs within the centre like abuse and the awful living conditions that make it seem more like a prison. (There is also a very special Shakespeare duck in it but you'll have to read it to find out about him!)
In the end I really did enjoy this book and would definitely recommend it.
