The Smell of Other People's Houses
I had never read a book before that is written from four people's perspectives but I think Hitchcock achieved this very well. (I think that writing from more than one character's point of view seems to be quite common among the shortlisted books this year) It was a little bit confusing because sometimes I had to stop to think what character I was reading about and how they relate to the other characters but at the end it was really clever how they all linked together.
The smell of other People's houses is set in 1970 and it includes four different stories that are intertwined. It had a good amount of action in and I liked the relationships between characters, particularly Ruth and her Gran's as it developed throughout the book as she learnt more about her Gran. I also liked how Alyce, Dora and Ruth all knew each other but each had different stories to tell.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s not one of my favourites although, I still liked it and would recommend to other people.
