After the Fire

'After the Fire' is an outstanding novel written by Will Hill. 17 year old Moonbeam has lived in the Lord's Legion with her Brothers and Sisters for most of her life however, when an Outsider comes inside the walls Moonbeam starts to see the lies behind leader Father John's words. "What if the only way out of the darkness, is to light a fire?"

The book's exciting story is told through a series of flashbacks - memories that she is telling to a psychiatrist and FBI agent to help them with their investigation. The reader knows as much as the doctor and the agent and just wants Moonbeam to trust them so that we can find out about her past. The story is told from Moonbeam's perspective and it is interesting to be inside the head of someone who has gone through such a traumatic event. An event that actually happens in real life.

A part of the book that I really liked was when Moonbeam has the group therapy sessions with her Brothers and Sisters. It was engaging to see how the other surviving children (most of them much younger than Moonbeam) had dealt with this calamity.

Overall, After the Fire was gripping, thrilling and addictive. I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to anyone over the age of 13 as it has some violent and disturbing scenes.
