Rook

'Rook' is a short yet powerful title written by Anthony McGowan. It is about two brothers Nicky and Kenny who discover an injured rook and Kenny, who has learning disabilities, is determined to keep it alive.

I think that this book is quite underrated and overlooked so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much. Nicky and Kenny are both interesting characters in their own way. It is heartwarming to see how Nicky treats his brother and it was also intriguing to learn a little bit about people with disabilities.

Rook is a perfect book to read if you are looking to kill some time. I would recommend reading it all at once as it only takes about an hour and flows a lot better. It is quite a fast-paced story and doesn't dwell on anything for too long so it gets to explore many different themes. In the future, I would definitely like to read Brock and Pike, the other books in this series of standalone novels.

Overall, I think this book was really great and would rate it four out of five stars. I also think that it is suitable for secondary school children over the age of 11 because it has some strong language.
