This book is about a young adult named Arturo who lives on the Mexican/American border. He is poor and lives out of contact with his father who is a rich widower. in the beginning of the book his old school friend Faustino visits him with a dilemma, he must pay a vast sum of dollars to a gang he is part of, or die. It's up to Arturo to get the money for Faustino. He ends up gambling to get the owed sum and makes a lot more than was needed, but loses it all, and to make matters worse, he owes $4000 to a local gang leader. In the end he sacrifices his life to save Faustinos.
