After the Fire
After the Fire is a book narrated by a girl called Moonbeam, who was formerly part of a cult called the Lord's Legion, led by Father John. The story starts with gripping action, detailing a fire in the cult's compound and then it splits into parts on before and after this event.
The 'before' chapters describe how life was like inside the compound, how Father John manipulated the people to obey and believe in his strict rules and extreme ideas about outsiders, and how Moonbeam starts to doubt her faith and Father John's words.
The 'after' chapters are based on Moonbeam talking to a psychologist and an FBI agent about what had happened, whilst also coming to terms with it herself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I found it extremely gripping and interesting, especially as it was loosely based on real events in Texas. The before and after chapters were put together very cleverly and I really liked the character of Moonbeam.
Overall, I would recommend this book, but perhaps to older readers.
