Salt to the Sea

Salt by the Sea is a touching book which follows Joana, Florian, Emilia and Alfred as they try the evacuate Russia on the Wilhelm Gustloff. I liked it because each character is mapped out and has there own fears, secrets, hopes and dreams which make everyone of them loveable and unique. My favourite character is the shoe poet who helps and guides the group in his own way, all the while protecting Klaus who is not even related to him. However this book is not without flaw and this books it pretty big. My complaint with it is that it is written with a different character telling a different chapter, which is a great idea but each chapter is two to three pages long. So often I had to go back and check who was telling the chapter, this is harder to understand in the beginning because you don't know what everyone is like. Overall, I think Salt to the Sea is a haunting but beautifully written book and I want many more like it to come.
