Hannah G, Larkmead Secondary School

The Hate U Give

Two completely different lives for one girl. One in a poor and rough neighbourhood that she lives in, and the other in a posh high school. Starr was born and raised in Garden Heights which is a hard place to live but she goes to school in a completely different environment; Williamson. It is definitely a challenge for Starr to cope going to school at Williamson and living in Garden Heights especially with all the shootings involving the police. It gets much worse when she watches her friend get shot by the police even though Khalil did nothing wrong. Starr wants justice but finds it hard to speak up. She begins to have problems at school which doesn't help the situation back at home and soon Starr and her family are put in terrible danger with the dangerous gang that rules her neighbourhood...

I think that 'The Hate U Give' is a very powerful book that makes you think how cruel the world can be if others look different. This book is also good because it has a gripping opening which makes you want to read more.
