The Hate U Give
An engaging book that tackles the issues of race and more specifically racism within the police force. It takes the reader through an emotional whirlwind which highlights larger issues, focusing on racial aspects and racial inequality and the way in which we perceive others and how race impacts on our everyday life.
It tells the story of how a young girl witnesses the murder of a friend who was killed by a police officer for no reason other than his skin colour. It takes the reader through a journey where we find the main character Starr ,who comes from a poor neighbourhood but goes to a posh high school, deal with the difficulties of being the witness and having to lie to her friends and her boyfriend and the disappointment of the corrupt justice system and how Starr becomes an activist after being ashamed of herself for not wanting to be involved in the case at all.
Overall a great read and a book I enjoyed and that I would highly recommend to readers of all ages.
