After the Fire
After the fire has to be the most engaging book shortlisted this year that I have read so far.
It tells the story of Moonbeam - a seventeen year old girl - who has spent most of her life within The Base which is home to a religious cult, controlled by Father John. Father John is a cruel man whom all within the wall believe to be the Prophet of the Lord. It depicts a dark, but gripping narrative that offers insight into the minds of fanatics and takes us through an emotional journey of abuse and torment, and the eventual realisation that Moonbeam’s whole life has been a lie, and this realisation is craftily built upon constantly throughout the novel. There is constant suspense and tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the perspective offered keeps us in the dark on certain matters throughout the novel, yet manages to answer them all by the end.
Overall a gripping and fascinating novel that I found to be captivating. I would highly recommend this book for readers of all ages and is a must read.
