Rook is a dramatic read as it veers between the ups and down of Nicky's life, as his mood flits between joy and sorrow. Joy because Nicky discovers love for the first time and sorrow because he's being bullied. To add to the woe, the object of his affection is his bully's sister.
Despite the tension, I didn't find the plot engaging enough to captivate my attention. Another criticism is that Rook is a misleading title as this bird has little impact on the storyline. All in all, I would say Anthony McGowan's book is very much an outsider rather than a favourite to take the Carnegie Prize.
