Mrs McJ, St Peter's School

The Hate U Give

This is quite a challenging read, but I think it's worth it. The book is set in America and of course the narrator is American so you need to get an American accent into your head while you're reading as there's a lot of dialogue. The main character is living a double life - going to private school in a 'nice', middle-class and very white area then going home to her home in a rough area. When her innocent and unarmed friend is shot dead by a policeman, her two worlds collide leaving her with big decisions to face. It was real eye-opener to see what life can be like for other people. It made me question my own values and beliefs. Definitely a book to make you think.
