Mrs Hourihan, Maynard School Library
I thought I wasn't going to like this book as the story is initially told from the rook's viewpoint and I usually prefer more realistic books. But then I found myself wondering what the rook was thinking about all the things that were happening to him, and would have liked a bit more of this!
I found the book engaging and it packed a lot in to a small number of pages. The characters were very appealing and the ending was sweet. I would now like to read the other two books about Nicky and Kenny.
There is a small amount of strong language in it, so young readers or anyone who prefers not to read books containing swearing might need to be warned.
Overall I enjoyed the book very much and would be happy if it won the Carnegie medal.
