Salt to the Sea
Salt to the sea written by Ruta Sepetys is a heartwrenching tale of four refugees. Each of them from different circumstances, all haunted, hunted by tragedy, lies and war. Joana, Florian and Emilia all pray and aspire to board the Wilhelm gustloff and escape to a haven of safety, however their plans are not always accessible. World War 2 is drawing to and close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate walk toward freedom. Among them are Joana, Emilia and Florian, whose paths converge on route to the ship that promises salvation. The three find their strength, courage and trust in one another tested with each step closer towards safety.
The novel completely transported me into the lives of people totally less fortunate than myself. The thought of people enduring all of this pain, made me angry, because people are age are genuinely going through this every single day.
A captivating historical fiction full of emotion, pain and friendship. It was a beautiful novel and I would strongly recommend it.
