Mrs. Pollard, St John Fisher RC High School
The Bone Sparrow
It took me two goes to get into the story but once I did, wow! Set in an Australian Detention Centre for refugees we discover the 'warts and all' story of Subhi who has known no other life. His family is from the marginalised Rohingya people from Burma, his mother travelled with his sister Queeny and Subhi was born in the camp. He looks forward to when his father will join them. Other important characters include Subhi's best friend Eli and a decent camp guard called Harvey. Jimmie enters the story later as a girl who lives a short distance away and can find her way into the camp through weak points in the fences. She brings treats for Subhi and in return he reads to her. The tense atmosphere in the camp boils over causing a sequence of events that affect everyone. This book highlights a situation that is still ongoing in Australia and it should be a winner!
