The Smell of Other People's Houses

I found the smell of other people’s houses a bit mediocre. I didn’t particularly find it very gripping

but it made me want to read on in certain characters stories like Ruth’s and Dora’s. The story was

based on an Alaskan town in 1970 and took the perspectives of 4 different characters. Though the

story didn’t gobsmack me it still had really good cliff hangers and kept me hooked at certain points. I

also liked that at certain points in the story you had to actually stop and digest what you were

reading, I really like it when a book makes me think. The book showed different issues in each of the

characters Ruth-young mothers, single parents Dora-domestic violence, alcohol addiction Hank-

neglection and single parents again Alyce-ignorant parents. I think the author could have portrayed

what she was trying to get across better as the message was not very clear. I wouldn’t recommend

this book as I don’t think it's worth putting your time into reading it though I do think there always is

someone that would like to read it, just not anyone I know. For this, I give the book 2.5 stars
