Railhead, by Philip Reed, turned out to be rather disappointing in my opinion.
The book had a promising start, in which the mysterious introduction to the character hooked me in immensely. The perplexing backstory of the main character, Zen Starling, was also very well introduced, giving the reader small snippets of information at a time, just enough to keep them hungry for more.
The stunning descriptions at the start of the story were also a big reason as to why I kept reading. Philip Reeve managed to find just the right descriptive words that matched the mysterious, fantasy atmosphere of the story perfectly.
However, the plot was where it had all unravelled for me.
Going from this amazingly gripping story, the plot started to spiral out of control, introducing new concepts so quickly that I found it rather confusing to follow the plot. The end of the book, I felt, was rather abrupt, and left me wondering if this was a series. This might be the case, however I feel that the author should tie up loose ends with the characters before ending the book.
All in all, I feel that this is a good book to read, however may need to be read a few times to be interpreted properly.
