About as left-field of teenage writing as it comes! This is like a picture book for teenagers … without pictures. It is a hugely entertaining, sometimes whimsical, and sometimes profound look at sibling relationships, grief, anxiety, coping, and so much more besides. And I think it works equally as well as a purely escapist bit of nonsense. There are certainly nods towards Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and other quest adventures but that doesn’t detract from its own originality. Fidge and Graham are both great characters, fallible but determined in their own way, and Ella and Dr Carrot are quirky but sensitive sidekicks. Overall, this book can be read on so many different levels and that is one of its best appealing qualities but it is worth reading for pure entertainment value alone!
