Beck, by Mal Peet, is the story of an orphan from Liverpool who gets sent to Canada. There he goes through many hardships until he finally finds his place. I very much enjoyed this book. Although it is rather an upsetting storyline, it is a real page-turner. More problems occur at each stage of his journey and makes the reader want to read more. However the book does contain a rather graphic passage towards the beginning. I also like the fact that the book was continued by Meg Rossof after her friend, Mal Peet, died so that the book was able to be published.
