Salt to the Sea
Salt to the Sea is the story of four people, Emilia, Florian, Albert and Joana, who have been struck badly by the war. They all end up on the Wilhelm Gutsloff, a german ship in charge of evacuating the refugees before the Russians arrive. Emilia is a pregnant, polish refugee, a good friend of Joana's, a nurse who falls in love with Florian, a discreet Prussian. Albert is a low-ranking member of the Nazi navy, easily influencable, aspiring to be a good, brave German, which he is not. This book is based on real facts which I very much like. It brings history to life in a way. The chapters are short and often end as cliff-hangers. The book is full of action throughout the narrators' jouney and the reader gets very attached to the characters (all except Albert). This book was hard-hitting but a very enjoyable read.
