Florence, Kingswood Carnegie Club

Salt to the Sea

I found the book very moving and sad but very good. The way that it is told from many people's perspectives really helps you to understand what they are going through.

It is about Joanna, Florian, Emilia and Alfred. Joanna is a young Latvian nurse who likes to help as many people as possible. Florian is a refugee but you don’t manage to find out much about him. Emilia is 15, and is nine months pregnant. Alfred is in the army and wants to be the “hero” but is not a very likeable character. I think you got very attached to all the characters (but maybe not Alfred) and also to all the characters they meet and make friends with.

Although I liked the book, I found it a bit hard to understand at the beginning. Overall, I would rate the book 9/10 and would urge you to read it.
