Ben, Woodroffe Book Surfers
The Hate U Give
I wasn't particularly expecting to enjoy this book - I think the title and the stylistics of the cover put me off a bit: they seemed to indicate a dark, tortured tale. Also, I am not really a fan of longer books, and this seemed a bit weighty. However, once I started reading I was quickly hooked. Although this is a serious book about important issues (with themes of race, oppression, police and gang violence and personal bereavement), it is an easy and engaging read. The characters are so well drawn that you empathise easily with them. Also, the structuring of events and consequences is well put together - this also helps the plot roll on at a pace.
I did think as I was reading that there were some segments that were a bit superfluous, as they didn't seem to really move the story forward, but by the end, I was feeling that these were all part of the fabric of an extremely well-drawn narrative, and helped give insight into the lives of the characters.
This is a book that will give you lots to think about! Highly recommended!
