Phoebe, King Alfreds Academy
“The year I turned twelve, I learnt how to lie,” Annabelle, the main character, tells us at the beginning of the story. It is set in her quiet Pennsylvania town while the Second World War was raging. But everything changes one day when a city girl called Betty Glengarry, a bully, walks into her class. At first, Annabelle thought she could deal with the bullying problems on her own. However, when Betty’s cruelty escalates, it has devastating consequences. When Betty goes missing, the suspicion falls on Toby-a shell-shocked veteran, who just happens to be gone as well. Nevertheless, Annabelle is adamant that Toby is innocent so she does her very best to help him and try to prove so. I think that this book was beautifully written with lots of detail and description. It really shows what it would have been like to live during the World Wars. The story had lots of twists and turns and definitely kept me turning the pages.
