The Smell of Other People's Houses
What an intriguing title! It just made you want to dip in and the first encounter is the smell of freshly slaughtered meat of one home then the cedar smell of another. Thankfully the smell element makes up a very tiny part of this book and instead you are sucked into the first person narratives of Ruth, Alyce, Dora and Hank which intertwine in the story. I loved these characters and their back stories plus those of the other characters who interact with them: Bunny and Dumpling, Gran, etc. A wonderful insight into some ways of life in Alaska in the early 1960s and a great coming of age story.
