Mrs. Pollard, St John Fisher RC High School
It is quite an undertaking to finish off another author's book though not unknown - Patrick Ness took on Siobhan O'Dowd's last book. However with Beck you could tell when one author finished and the other carried on, Mal Peet's use of descriptive language is brilliant and I didn't feel this carried on. Story wise Beck is a shocker for the first few chapters with the theme of abuse in the Home before he is sent to the farm. I enjoyed the complete story but felt it was disjointed and we were missing explanations as to how Beck had arrived at various locations and the lack of consequences on leaving the farm. The remainder was a touching love story and all seems to resolve happily though we anticipate Grace and Beck will face prejudice of their own in their continued relationship.
