Alex, A&H Shadowers

The Stars at Oktober Bend

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. This is the story of Alice, a teenage girl who aged 12 suffered a traumatic brain injury - amongst other things. As a result Alice no longer goes to school, but spends her time at home with her grandmother, her brother Joey and her dog, Bear, creating beautiful fishing flies and works of art, and writing poems, which she then leaves for strangers to find. Manny is an outsider, adopted from his own traumatic past in Sierra Leone, who finds Alice's poems and falls in love with their writer and longs to find her. This is a truly beautiful book, Alice's language is captivating, and although it deals with some very serious and dark themes, ultimately the message of the book is one of beauty and hope.
