Erin, Chobham Academy Book Group
This book caused serious controversy within our book group as we tried to decide whether to allow the youngest members (11 year olds) to read this.
The detail and complexity of Beck's life as it is written is enthralling, certainly making this book one that simply cannot be put down. The seriousness of the themes would undoubtedly be too much for younger readers but I found the constant sense of hope throughout Beck's story to be empowering as a reader and as a "participant" in Beck's life.
Meg Rosoff has done a fantastic job finishing the work of Mal Peet, it is impossible to tell which parts are whose.
