Hope, Keep Calm and Carry on Reading 2017
The Smell of Other People's Houses
In 'The Smell of Other People's Houses' it is based on 4 very different people.
The chapters are set out as each person, Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank. I really like the structure of this book and how each chapter is set out.
Ruth is a 16 year old girl who's father died at age 5. Her Mum went crazy and was sent away after the birth of Ruth's little sister, Lily. Ruth becomes pregnant and her Gran sends her to an abbey full of nuns.
Dora has an abusive father and an alcoholic Mum. She gets looked after by Dumpling and Bunny's parents. However, i didn't understand Dora's storyline apart from her abusive family. She also struggles with friendship issues.
Alyce is an aspiring Ballerina. However, her Ballet college audition is during her annual fishing trip with her father. While she is on this fishing trip she rescues a boy called Sam after he falls out of a ferry. In the end she finally manages to get to the ballet audition.
Hank is running away from his parents with his two brothers, Sam and Jack. They are stowaways on a ferry which his brother Sam falls out of. Their storyline is based on finding Sam.
In addition to this I would definitely recommend this book to other people because I really like it and I thought it was a good book.
