Ms Chumbley, BMS (Books, Munchies and Squash)

The Hate U Give

This book is for slightly older readers primarily due to the language which is colloquial and includes a lot of swearing. The novel tackles important themes of prejudice, racism, injustice and police brutality, tracking the shocking experience of a teenage girl. A mixed race relationship is used to help expose unintentional racism. Despite the violence - shootings, riots and gang beatings - a lot of the novel is actually very funny. The banter shared by the characters is nicely written, conveying a strong sense of voice although towards the end, when the violence peaks, it’s hard to tell sometimes whether you are in a comedy or serious contemporary realism. The idea of voice is central, however, and the encouragement to have courage and speak out for truth and justice is a strength of the novel.
